Letter: A Few Facts about Job Evaluation


Dear Editor, Coun Rudge wants to talk about facts and job evaluation and single status in Birmingham City Council? (Post Letters, February 20).

Fact - in some departments, a third of staff will be seeing a pay cut and in some departments up to a half of staff are looking like they might be downgraded.

Fact - nearly 5,000 members of staff will get a pay cut and for over 1,000 of them it will be more than pounds 5,000 a year.

Fact - single status wasn't intended to be hijacked and used as a means to enforce new and less favourable terms and conditions on all members of staff.

Fact - there has been no consultation with staff. Ask any employee of BCC just exactly how they have been 'consulted'.

Fact - any more than three years' pay protection is not illegal. This would only be true if those whose pay was protected were predominantly male and those whose jobs weren't downgraded were predominantly female. This is because the female workers whose jobs haven't been downgraded could claim they have been disadvantaged because they are female. …
