WALES: Early Boost for Autistic in N.Wales Study; Home Teaching Aids Little Children

AUTISTIC toddlers in North Wales are being given new hope by a team of top university psychologists who have developed ways of raising their IQ scores.

Experts at Bangor university school of psychology say their studies of an "intensive intervention" tutoring programme for children as young as three in their own homes can work

They have found that as well as achieving improved IQs, they have developed better language skills than autistic children in mainstream schools.

The Early Intensive Behavioural Intervention (EIBI) study has been welcomed by Research Autism, the UK's expert body dealing with therapies (interventions) for autistic people.

Working with researchers at Southampton university, Bangor's team was led by Professor Richard Hastings.

He said: "Our result show that a group of children who received two years of intensive tutoring had higher IQs, more advanced language, and better daily living skills than similar children receiving standard educational provision.

"IQ increased for two-thirds of the children receiving the early intervention and very substantially for more than a quarter of them. …
