Markets Great and Small Are Our Thing; CLEAVER SCIENTIFIC: Trade Award Contender's Approach Is Paying off BUSINESS AWARDS

NO MARKET is too small for Cleaver Scientific - and that approach is helping it become a leading supplier to the world's medical research and DNA testing industries.
In the two years since managing director Adie Cleaver set up his scientific equipment company, it has gained customers in more than 80 countries.
And those export sales have grown from nothing to form 75 per cent of the business.
Based in Rugby, CS has found success in distributing products to parts of the globe including West Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America and Asia. And it has already won a national DTI-backed export achievement award.
Employing 15 people, the company is now contesting the Coventry Telegraph's UK Trade and Investment-sponsored International Trade Award.
Primarily, Cleaver manufactures and sells electrophoresis products equipment, which makes use of gels to mobilise and separate gene samples into different sizes for analysis.
Sales manager Alan Phillips is grateful for the opportunities provided by "invaluable" funding from the Department of Trade and Industry's Passport Scheme.
He said: "Attending overseas trade exhibitions, most recently in Chicago, has enabled us to meet lots of potential distributors over a short space of time. …
