Cholesterol is the soft waxy fat found in the bloodstream that isproduced naturally by the liver and required for cell membranes, hormones andother vital functions.
However, it cannot dissolve in the blood and has to be carried by lipoproteins,which can either be high density (HDL = good cholesterol) or low density (LDL =bad cholesterol). A high level of HDL seems to protect against heart attacks,whereas high levels of LDL can indicate heart problems.
The body produces all the cholesterol it needs, so any dietary intake should belimited by staying away from saturated fats and transfats.
