ACOMMUNITY project in Northumberland is improving a record number of places and empowering residents to get involved in decision making around local green spaces.
Wansbeck Community Greenspace project works with communities to identify local areas of derelict and underused land in need of improvement, from woodlands and public parks to meadows and community gardens.
As part of the project an Environmental Action Team made up of local volunteers was created to deliver these improvements in partnership with environmental regeneration charity Groundwork.
These include planting, litter picks, willow weaving, new seating facilities and decking, as well as creating access and navigation paths on sites.
Since last October, 2,100 local people have been involved in this project with more than 4,000 trees and over 3,200 plants and wild flowers planted during 700 volunteer days.
Carol Crossland, from North Blyth said: "The value of this work gives our village a sense of ownership and achievement of projects carried out."
With more than 40 regular volunteers and partners including local schools and Mind Active frequently participating, the project has also been used as a focus for free training, advice, expertise and community development. …
