Huhne Targets 'Calamity Clegg'; Nick Clegg: Heated Denial
THE Liberal Democrat leadership contest turned personal last night afterChris Huhne's camp called rival Nick Clegg 'a calamity' in a briefing document.
Mr Huhne was confronted with the embarrassing memo - entitled 'Calamity Clegg'- as he was being interviewed alongside Mr Clegg on BBC One's Politics Show.
With only three days to go before ballot papers are sent to LibDem members,presenter Jon Sopel produced the briefing document, which he said had beengiven to him by the Huhne camp.
Mr Huhne looked uncomfortable as he insisted he had not seen - or authorised -it.
But he then launched into an onslaught against his rival.
With Mr Clegg looking on,
Mr Huhne said: 'I don't support describing anyone else in the party as acalamity. But I do think we've seen a series of flip-flops from Nick.' Heaccused Mr Clegg, his only rival in the race to succeed
Sir Menzies Campbell, of failing to establish clear policies on nuclearweapons, aspects of running schools and the NHS.
Mr Clegg hit back by accusing Mr Huhne of trying to create 'syntheticdifferences' which 'our opponents will use against us'. …
