Binay Doubts GMA Deadline to End Insurgency by 2010
Makati City Mayor and PDP-Laban national president Jejomar C. Binay said yesterday that Mrs. Arroyo's self-imposed deadline to end the communist insurgency by 2010 appears unrealistic.
Binay reminded Mrs. Arroyo that the hardline approach she has adopted had failed to stop the communist insurgency before. Instead, Binay said the government should address the causes of insurgency.
"Poverty, injustice, and the rampant violation of human rights -- especially in the rural areas -- are the factors that fan the communist insurgency. Government should work towards addressing these needs," Binay said.
The Makati mayor, head of the United Opposition (UNO), said the Arroyo administration is using the same approach taken by the Marcos regime, which also promised to wipe out the then fledging communist insurgency.
"The hardline approach could even fuel unrest in some areas, especially when innocent civilians are caught in the crossfire and are made to bear the brunt of government operations against communist rebels," he said. …
