31 M Employees, Officials Return to Work Today

More than 31 million public and private sector workers, including 1.4 million government employees and 17,000 elective officials, return to work today as the two sets of long Yuletide holidays consisting of four days each ended yesterday.
Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE) Secretary Arturo Brion said the workers, many of them returning from the provinces, are expected to report for work refreshed and reinvigorated by the long Yuletide holidays.
"Christmas and New Year holidays are very much welcome in the Philippines where Catholicism is deeply rooted," the DoLE chief said.
The two sets of long holidays were made possible by President Arroyo's issuance of Proclamation No. 1211 declaring Monday, Dec. 24, and another Monday, Dec. 31, non-working holidays. The first set of holidays started last Dec. 24 and ended on Dec. 25, Christmas Day.
The second sets commenced on Jan. 29, Saturday, and ended yesterday, New Year's Day.
Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said President Arroyo issued Proclamation 1211 to enable Filipinos, the bulk of whom belong to the Catholic religion, to fully commemorate Christmas and the New Year. …
