Hospital Rescue Deal Challenged; FINANCE: Worries over Effect on Other Health Services

COUNCILLORS have quizzed health bosses on whether "bailing" Coventry's University Hospital out of the red will have an impact on medical care in the city.

The city council's health scrutiny committee held a public question session with Martin Lee, interim chief executive of the city's new hospital in Walsgrave, and senior NHS managers.

On January 8, a pounds 50.5million rescue package was announced to help University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust "regain a robust financial position".

It is one of 17 acute trusts in the UK, with a reported pounds 74million shortfall for 2007/8, and the need to find pounds 30million savings. As part of the solution, Coventry Teaching Primary Care Trust (PCT) and Warwickshire PCT each agreed to pay pounds 2million a year for the next five years.

West Midlands Strategic Health Authority (SHA) is contributing pounds 14.5million and the hospital will pay back pounds 16million from land sales.

Cllr Dave Nellist was concerned that by "bailing out the local acute trust" health services in Coventry could be threatened and there would be a lack of funding for longer-term preventative health projects. …
