Research -- a Response to Globalization Challenges

RECENTLY, we wrote about need for information mediators who can assist in analyzing varying perspectives on public issues. The effectiveness of these mediators would depend on the availability and accessibility of new knowledge generated by research institutions. There are many promising initiatives in this area of knowledge capital generation, some of which include the Department of Science and Technology, primarily through its National Research Council, the Philippine Institute of Development Studies, the Philippine Social Science Council, the University of the Philippines and the state universities in various regions.
Last February, the West Visayas State University in Iloilo celebrated its centennial by convening a research conference in collaboration with the National Research Council of the Philippines. Some 1,200 researchers from local and international higher education institutions participated in the three-day conference which focused on the sharing of knowledge on teacher education, sciences, mathematics and technology, medicine and health, humanities and social sciences, agriculture and allied fields, media and communication, and information technology and engineering.
The West Visayas State University, a regional center of excellence conducts collaborative research with several local, national, and international institutions. It lists as some of its pioneering research studies crosscultural sciences education, endangered wildlife species, the "darag" or Philippine native chicken, natural products and buffalo breeding. The WVSU president, Dr. Pablo E. Subong Jr, Dr. Evelyn D. Tomambo, Vice President for Research, Extension and Training and Conference Overall-Chair, and Dr. Gerard L. Penecilla, Director for Research and Conference Co-Chair, and Dr. Olivia C. Caoli, outgoing president of the National Research Council of the Philippines deserve commendation for this successful endeavor. All four officials underscored the challenges of globalization and the role of knowledge generation and exchange in achieving global competitiveness. …
