Homes Could Go on Site of Battle; HALL PROPOSAL

STUDENT flats are planned on a historic site where a famous Civil War battle was fought.
The scheme, which will help tackle a shortage of student accommodation, involves building a five-storey block with 62 bed spaces near the Northumbria University City East campus in Newcastle.
The site, east of Falconar Street, is close to a residential area where people have protested in the past about students causing problems in the neighbourhood.
It is also on the site of Shieldfield Fort, dating back to around 1640, which is shown on old plans and played a crucial role in the siege of Newcastle in 1644 during the Civil War. Officials say objects such as pottery, glass, coins and weapons may remain and an archaeological evaluation is needed as a condition of any planning consent.
Residents lost a long running battle over plans for a 443-space student development in nearby Camden Street when the developers won a planning appeal after the scheme was turned down by the council.
Council officials say during consultations one objection was received to the latest scheme from a neighbour who says there are too many student flats in Shieldfield. …
