AN 18-year-old has been shot dead in an execution-style attack the 22nd killing of a teenager in London this year.

The youth was hit outside a Costcutter supermarket and ran inside as he tried to escape three gunmen in Southwark.

Onlookers said the shooting at 9.45pm yesterday was gang related and part of a vicious "postcode warfare". Paramedics desperately tried to save the youth but he died at the scene in Camberwell Road.

One man, who asked not to be named, said the youth had deliberately crossed into a rival gang's rea as an act of bravado. "If you cross over you are going to make sure everyone knows about it. It was a statement," he said.

"He wanted to be a big man. That is why it happened. It is a gang zone around here. He is from the wrong side and came down here trying to act the big man. The road is split into different ' They came into the store and fired shots twice'

gangs. You can't go into the wrong side. That's life. I have known him for years, ever since he was a kid. He did not go to school, he was in a gang." Witnesses told how three men had chased two victims before opening fire twice and fleeing on a scooter.

Lee Saunders, who lives next door to the supermarket, said: "I had just finished work. As I got to the corner I saw three black guys on a moped they almost hit my car and then headed off into the estate.

"One of the shopkeepers at Costcutter told me they came into the shop and fired shots twice." Police sealed off a large section of the road as they carried out forensic searches. Officer's from the Met's Trident team, which deals with shootings in the black community, are investigating the killing. …
