Ilocos Sur Is Best in Poverty Reduction
VIGAN CITY -- Ilocos Sur was adjudged as the best local government unit (LGU) in the implementation of poverty-reduction program in Region 1 in 2006 and 2007, it was reported. The selection of the province for the award was based on the evaluation conducted by the Regional Kalahi Convergence Group (RKCG).
Ilocos Sur Gov. Deogracias Victor "DV" B. Savellano was elated by the award.
This was the second time that the province received the coveted award in the region. The province won the recognition first in 2005.
This year's awarding ceremony was held last Oct. 29 in San Fernando City, La Union.
"I am very glad that our province receives the award as the best in the implementation of the poverty-reduction program in the region. I would like to share this award with the members of the technical working group involved in the implementation of the poverty-reduction program," Savellano said.
Provincial Social Welfare and Development Officer Ferdinand Concepcion said that the evaluation for the search covered the administration of Governor Savellano and the administration of former Governor Luis "Chavit" Singson.
The province undertakes various activities under its poverty-reduction program, such as "The Ilocos Sur Hotline" aired over DWRS Commando Radio; the KABSAT (Kakailian nga Agnaed iti Bar-Barangay Sangsangkamaysa Agrang-ay Tayo) caravan held in every town; DVBS (Distribution of Various Barangay Services) program, the Barangay Demo Farm in San Juan, Ilocos Sur; the conduct of farmers and social services summits in the province such as the corn summit, tobacco summit, garlic and onion summit, barangay health worker summit. …
