DENR, mining firm to deploy forest rangers

BAYUGAN III, Rosario, Agusan del Sur - A mining firm that pledged to continue helping the government in its environment preservation and forest protection has poured another financial assistance by deputizing Forest Rangers to thwart "kaingin making" and timber poaching in Northeastern Mindanao, particularly in this land-locked timber-producing province. Under a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between the Philsaga Mining Corporation and Department of the Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Agusan del Sur Province, the mining company committed to shoulder the monthly salaries of the Forest Rangers that will be employed to conduct forest protection and other related activities. Philsaga Mining Corporation was represented by its president retired Army Col. Samuel G. Afdal, while Agusan del Sur PENR Officer Sixto C. Badua and Bunawan CENR Officer Eutiquio M. Bade, Jr. represented the DENR. The signing was also witnessed by other top mining and local government unit officials in Bunawan town. The MoA signing was also witnessed by other stakeholders, particularly those coming from the provincial and municipal government and officials of the multi-sectoral-forest protection committee (MFPC). It was gathered that Philsaga mining shoulder the salaries of the Forest Rangers, while the DENR will conduct recruitment, orientation, training, seminars, deputation and supervision of the rangers.
