Senate Bills Define Use of 'Red Cross'
The Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) yesterday said they are supporting Senate Bills 2370 and 2458, "The Red Cross and Other Emblems Bill" or "An Act Defining the Use and Protection of the Red Cross, Red Crescent, and Red Crystal Emblems."
PNRC Secretary General Corazon Alma de Leon said in a memorandum to officials and chapter administrators of the Red Cross that the PNRC and International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) have embarked moves to support the two bills in the Upper Chamber which are authored by PNRC Chairman and Sen. Richard J. Gordon and PNRC Governor and Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri.
"We urge your chapter to participate in lobbying for the Emblem Bill so we can improve the protection not only for the Red Cross emblem but also for the Red Crescent and Red Crystal symbols," De Leon said.
To date, only Dections 14, 15, and 16 of Presidential Decree No. 1264 (as amended) penalize the unlawful use by any other person or entity, aside from the Medical Services of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the PNRC, of the words "Red Cross" or "Geneva Red Cross" or use the emblem of the red Greek cross on white ground or any designation, design, sign, or insignia constituting imitation thereof for any purpose. …
