Papal Aide 'Insulting to Memory of Holocaust'
POPE Benedict condemned violence by both Israel and Hamas militants yesterday a day after one of his senior aides infuriated Jews by calling Gaza a big concentration camp.
The Pope told diplomats: Military options are no solution and... violence, wherever it comes from and whatever form it takes, must be firmly condemned. But while the Pope was at pains to make his speech even-handed, one of his senior aides was not so diplomatic.
On Wednesday, Cardinal Renato Martino, his spokesman for justice and peace issues, delivered the Vaticans toughest criticism of Israel since the latest crisis began, calling Gaza a big concentration camp in an interview with an Italian online newspaper.
Defenceless populations are always the ones who pay. Look at the conditions in Gaza: more and more, it resembles a big concentration camp, he said.
Israel condemned the aides comments, expressing shock that the vocabulary of Hamas propaganda was used by a Vatican spokesman. We are astounded to hear from a spiritual dignitary words that are so far removed from truth and dignity, said Israeli foreign ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor. …
