WATCH OUT VCD! Underdogs Eye Another Scalp NORTHERN LEAGUE FOOTBALL IN ASSOCIATION WITH CLEVELAND FINANCIAL SERVICES PLANNING the FA VASE

Byline: By ANTHONY VICKERS

MIGHTY Marske are aiming to cast aside their underdog status to pull off another FA Vase upset tomorrow.

The second division Seasiders travel to Kent side VCD Athletic in the fourth round of the minnows' national knockout competition looking to claim another scalp.

So far they have seen off NL top flight sides Northallerton and Bishop Auckland plus Division Two rivals Sunderland RCA, earned the performance of the round award by beating league leaders Consett 1-0 away and thumped Northern Counties East high-fliers Pickering 7-0.

But despite those eyebrow-raising results, boss Paul Burton stills feels the Crayford-based Vickers factory works side - who have won eight in a 10- match unbeaten run in the Kent League Premier Division and who beat West Auckland at this stage last year - will be the favourites.

"They are a strong side from a strong league so once again we will be the underdogs," he said.

"I've been to watch them and they look good.

They are well organised, big and direct. I didn't see any outstanding individuals but they are a hard-working unit so it will be tough - but that is what you expect at this stage.

"But my team are in excellent form, we've beaten some very good sides to get this far and we are really looking forward to it. I really think we can spring a bit of a surprise.

"We've had an excellent run. We've only lost once in 21 games, we don't concede many and we have lads up front like Jon Newton and Benn Thompson that can score goals so I am confident that if we can keep it tight we can get something."

Marske are preparing properly for the trip. The squad travelled today and will spend the night in a plush Brands Hatch hotel.

"It is in the middle of nowhere so there won't be any distractions," he said. "It is a meal together, a quick pint, then early to bed.

"We are stopping over in St Albans after the game as well. The club have supported us superbly in this and made sure we have done things right. We will prepare as professionally as possible and give the lads a night out too."

Marske will be backed by a loud travelling army who will make it seems more like a home game.

"There is coach and a couple of mini-buses coming plus a few stragglers making their own way from various parts of the country," said Burton. …
