Creating Tomorrow's Engineering Talent


The aims and objectives of the Engineering Education Scheme - Wales (EESW) are to encourage bright sixth form students into professional engineering careers through partnership activity between schools/ colleges and companies. It also exposes students to the rigours and disciplines of industry constraints and deadlines while working on a real technical problem-much of the work being carried out at the school or college base-but with regular sessions with the assigned company engineer. It also increases the motivation and self-confidence of the students.

The EESW has developed strong connections with many universities, professional bodies and industry with almost 500 students throughout Wales on the scheme this year. It offers an initial opportunity in that partnership which can nurture the recruitment and development of a well motivated, highly qualified, competitive workforce, capable of ensuring innovative success and the future prosperity of companies in Wales.

EESW encourages the most able young people to consider engineering as a career. The scheme is run in partnership with The Royal Academy of Engineering and has been operating since1989.

A professional engineer from a link company works with a team of up to five high ability Year 12/13 students and their teacher, for five to six months, on a real engineering problem of interest to the company. The students, their teacher and the professional engineer spend several days in a university where the project can be discussed with academic experts and where workshops and other advanced facilities can be accessed to support the project.

The EESW scheme has been highly successful.

The response of the participants, in the end of project questionnaire, shows a very high level of satisfaction with many if not most of the students considering engineering as a career.

The students benefit from the application and development of all six Key Skills, they gain experience in interview techniques, team working, project management and communication, and prosper from exposure to the multidisciplinary nature of engineering.

The company gains from the interaction with the schools and universities, and some of the projects have led to spectacular financial savings for the companies. …
