Ontong Spins Cobrasstraight to Pro20 Win

The much-maligned Cape Cobras senior players answered their critics in emphatic fashion with a 16-run victory over the Titans in their Pro20 game at Newlands yesterday.
Skipper Justin Ontong spearheaded the charge with a brilliant all-round performance. Ontong bludgeoned an undefeated 59 from 38 balls to set up his team's total of 157/4. The captain then bowled a superb spell of off-spin bowling to restrict the Titans to 141/9.
But this Cobras victory was no one-man show. Opener Andrew Puttick kept the innings together when wickets were tumbling around him to score 35 at close to a run-a-ball. The left-hander shared a 67-run partnership with Ontong, just when the visitors were looking to take a firm grip on proceedings.
Although 410 runs was the total aggregate in the last match played at Newlands, Ontong was confident his bowlers could restrict the much-vaunted Titans batting line-up.
"I thought our score was par on that wicket," said Ontong. "The wicket was much slower than last week. With our bowling attack, which is very experienced, I was reasonably comfortable that we could defend that score."
Titans openers Gulam Bodi and Blake Snijman raced to 50 without loss after the conclusion of the Powerplay (6) overs. Bodi took advantage of being dropped by Henry Davids at cover in the second over to flay the Cobras opening bowlers around the park.
However, Ontong's introduction into the attack in the seventh over immediately put the brakes on the Titans innings, when he deceived Snijman (17) through the air, before clean bowling Roelof van der Merwe (2) in his next over.
"I just spun it straight today," Ontong joked about his bowling performance. "The pace was crucial at which you had to bowl. I'm just happy I could contribute to team's performance. …
