SA's 100 Top Secondary Schools Are Identified

The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation has identified its top 100 secondary schools in South Africa through its Circle of Excellence initiative.

The Circle of Excellence, launched last year, evaluates excellence in education and consistent delivery of successful candidates in the Allan Gray Fellowship. These schools will receive recognition, support at various levels and encouragement from the foundation to ensure their high standards are maintained. Schools remain a part of the Circle for three years.

Anthony Farr, chief executive of the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation, says finding the schools was not easy. "A concerning reality of the secondary school system in South Africa is the relatively small pockets of educational excellence that exist," he said.

"However, it must be said the number of schools identified by the Circle of Excellence has increased from 73 in 2008 to 100 in 2009. With 27 added, we hope to have more learners with academic and entrepreneurial flair apply to the foundation."

Circle of Excellence schools can submit their top three students as part of the foundation's early selection process to ensure their candidates are given first option to apply for the fellowship programme. Schools are also encouraged to attend the annual strategy workshops. These give them access to some of the top strategic business thinkers, who help them translate strategic thinking from the boardroom to the classroom.

The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation was established in 2005 to identify and grow future change agents, and is based on the belief that entrepreneurial thinking is key to unlocking economic growth and to creating a vibrant economy.

The foundation's objectives are to bolster job creation and alleviate poverty by harnessing the power of pioneering young bright sparks with enough entrepreneurial potential to positively affect our collective future, says Farr. …
