Lady on the Mend While Owner Faces Court Date

WHILE Lady recovers from a hysterectomy after a uterus infection, her owner will face his day in court next month.
Earlier this month, Lady was found malnourished and chained to a disused toilet.
She was removed from the home of Democratic Alliance Greyton and Genadendal ward councillor Caroline Wood.
Wood's husband, Norman, has been charged by the police with animal neglect.
The abuse of Lady has prompted a widespread outcry, with letters to the Cape Times, an e-mail petition and postings on internet forums and social networking website Facebook calling for the dismissal of Wood as councillor.
Wood has said she was not responsible for the dog's condition, as Lady did not belong to her and she was "hardly at home". But animal welfare groups maintain Wood should have taken responsibility for Lady, who had suffered neglect for "possibly her whole life".
The Karoo Animal Protection Society's Annette Carson said infections such as the one Lady suffered were common when dogs were "left chained up amid their own faeces in filthy backyards" and often resulted in the dog's death. …
