Torres Strait Traditions
ON THE Edge: visions of a tropical coastline is a contemporary exhibition showcasing the artistic content of 12 North Queensland artists of high calibre, who represent the cultural diversity of the region.
It is also a response to the environmental changes occurring, for example the loss of heritage in a regional context through homogenising modernity and progress.
The group consists of Dennis Nona, Alick Tipoti, Brian Robinson, Joey Laifoo, Ceferino Sabatino, Arone Meeks, Rosella Namok, Elaine Lampton, Zane Sounders, Ian Horn, Anna Eglitis and Sasi Victoire.
On the Edge: visions of a tropical coastline is not an eclectic or arbitrary expose of the work of local artists living in Far North Queensland. Instead it is an exhibition exploring the maturity, confidence and progress to date of 12 established artists of both national and international repute.
Dennis Nona, Alick Tipoti, Brian Robinson, Joey Laifoo and Ceferino Sabatino are all Torres Strait Islander artists still practicing and deriving inspiration form their strongly-linked heritage and oceanic location to draw on a rich Torres Strait tradition of storytelling. …
