Challenging Race Discrimination with Effective Policies and Training
YOU might think racism is not a problem in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan in 2009 but each year anti-racism charity Race Equality First is contacted by people who have experienced racial discrimination in areas such as employment, housing, education and service provision.
The organisation's approach to challenging such discrimination is two-fold. Firstly its Discrimination Advice Service assists victims of racism in pursuing their cases through appropriate channels. Secondly, it offers a specific policy, training and consultation service through which it advises employers and service providers on race equality issues to help ensure that racism does not occur in the first place.
Mohammed Tufail OBE, director of Race Equality First, said: "Businesses and employers have a role to play in eradicating racism for both employees and customers.
"Racial discrimination is unlawful and we know from our work that failure to comply with the law can cost organisations dearly in terms of tribunal costs, low productivity, absenteeism, high staff turnover, recruitment costs and poor reputation.
"Through our policy service we can assist organisations with the implementation of effective equal opportunities policies to ensure that they comply with the law. …
