Equality Standard Helps Firms Meet New Regulations
THE Equality Bill, which started its journey through parliament in April 2009, is expected to enter the statute books during 2010. It heralds the most far-reaching discrimination legislation for many years and will have a major impact on every employer - whether public, private or third sector.
The legislation will be strengthened and simplified and bring in many new measures, including the requirement for the public sector to use the procurement process to measurably embed equality and diversity in its private and third sector supply chains.
This will be particularly relevant to organisations that deliver front line services on behalf of the public sector e.g. construction, housing, care and learning provision.
It is an extensive list: The need for transparency in the workplace, including around pay and monitoring.
Extending the reach of age discrimination legislation.
Extending the scope of positive action.
Liz Reay, Chief Executive of Equality North East said: "This legislation will affect employers in many ways. It is imperative that they are prepared.
"The Government Equalities Office and the Equality and Human Rights Commission have developed a package of materials which will support organisations to implement the policies and practices which will help ensure that they can comply with the legislation.
"Here in the North East, Equality North East continues to help employers tangibly improve and then evidence their increased equality and diversity competencies beyond the usual 'tick box' exercise."
