DUMPED JER IS RANK ROTHEN; Dumped Jerome Is Rank Rothen
Byline: Keith Jackson
JEROME ROTHEN'S short-lived Rangers career is as good as over as the Frenchman hankers for a return home next month.
The winger is expected back at Murray Park this week after being struck down with suspected swine flu following a trip home to stay with his family in Paris but Rothen will be told there is no longer any place for him in Walter Smith's top-team plans.
Instead, the manager will be happy to grant Rothen his wish of a January move back to Paris St Germain - less than four months into what was supposed to be a year-long loan deal.
Former French international Rothen was drafted in as an emergency signing on the final day of the August transfer window but his dismal formhas failed to inspire Smith's side.
In fact, he has not kicked a ball for Rangers since his woeful performance in a humiliating 4-1 Champions League defeat to Romanian minnows Unirea Urziceni on October 20.
Aclub source said: "Rothen has been back in France for a while recovering from swine flu and had a doctor's note until the middle of this month.
"He's due back this week but he's made it pretty clear he would prefer not to be in Glasgow at all.
"That suits the club just fine and the manager will be pleased to allow him to return to France at the first available opportunity."
Smith has told DaMarcus Beasley there is now no need for him to leave Rangers to realise his World Cup dream. The American last week revealed he was considering quitting Ibrox next month because he feared his lack of match action would cost him his place in the USA squad. …
