Masked Gang in Vicious Assault on Two Friends; PALS ATTACKED WITH HAMMER AND TOXIC SPRAY BY TRIO

MASKED thugs attacked two men with a hammer and toxic gas in a latenight assault on Tyneside. An investigation has been launched after the incident, at around 12.40am on Sunday, near the junction of The Drive and Slatyford Lane, in East Denton, Newcastle.

The two men, 32 and 36, were with two women, 32 and 28, when they were targeted.

Three men, who had their faces covered, launched the attack and hit the 32-year-old man with a hammer. Meanwhile, the 36-year-old was sprayed in the face with an as yet unidentified noxious substance.

Det Sgt Mick Lindsay, of Newcastle CID, who is leading the probe, said: "We're doing everything we can to find out exactly what happened."

The two victims were taken to Newcastle General Hospital for treatment.

Doctors said the 32-year-old man was discharged following treatment while the 36-year-old has been admitted to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary for further attention.

Today, he was still under doctors' supervision, but it is thought his injuries were not life-threatening. …
