Los Republicanos Refuerzan Su Cortejo a Los Latinos

Algunos polticos republicanos importantes est[sz]n adoptando una retrica sobre inmigracin m[sz]s conciliadora y tratando de reclutar a m[sz]s candidatos hispanos. Los cambios responden al examen de conciencia del partido sobre t[sz]cticas que, segn muchos estrategas, los ha distanciado del bloque de votantes de m[sz]s r[sz]pido crecimiento del pas.

En Texas, George P. Bush, el hijo mexico-americano del ex gobernador de Florida Jeb Bush, fund Hispanic Republicans of Texas, un comit de accin poltica que promueve a los hispanos que se postulan a cargos pblicos. Adem[sz]s, Tom Price, congresista republicano de Georgia y quien en el pasado se ha opuesto a planes para conceder la ciudadana a indocumentados, ha estado reunindose con lderes latinos para crear un nuevo di[sz]logo en este y otros temas de disensin entre hispanos y conservadores.

Para los republicanos, estos esfuerzos conllevan riesgos, especialmente por los intentos de los activistas conservadores de que sus candidatos del "Grand Old Party" (GOP), como es conocido el Partido Republicano, sean de ideologas m[sz]s puras. Oponerse a una "amnista", la palabra de moda entre los crticos a la legalizacin de los 12 millones de inmigrantes indocumentados que se estima viven en Estados Unidos, sigue siendo una garanta de aplausos.

Sin embargo, muchos en el partido han llegado a la conclusin de que la oposicin a una legislacin migratoria, un debate en ocasiones con un componente racial, ha alejado a millones de votantes hispanos conservadores.

Los republicanos obtuvieron slo 31% del voto latino en las elecciones presidenciales de 2008, segn sondeos a boca de urna, frente a m[sz]s de 40% cuatro a[+ or -]os antes, despus de que el partido endureciera su postura sobre poltica migratoria. Ese fue un factor decisivo que dio al presidente Barak Obama su victoria en el Colegio Electoral y un margen a favor de siete puntos porcentuales sobre John McCain, el senador republicano. Si continan las actuales tendencias demogr[sz]ficas y de voto, la creciente cuota del electorado hispano podra hacer pr[sz]cticamente imposible una victoria republicana en el Colegio Electoral en 2020. …
