WAMSO Competition Winners Announced
Jonathan Cohen, a 2 l-year-old clarinetist from Evanston, Illinois, won first prize at the 54th annual WAMSO Young Artist Competition in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Cohen is a student at the Manhattan School of Music in New York and studies with Mark Nuccio. He received $7,500 in WAMSO awards, along with the $1,000 Mathilda Heck Woodwind Award. He also won a taped performance on McGraw Hill's Young Artist Showcase on WQXR in New York City.
Pianist William Cahill Smith, of Tallahassee, Alabama, won second prize, a $4,000 WAMSO award. He is pursuing a master's degree in piano performance at the University of Michigan, School of Music, with teacher Arthur Greene. His second place prize also includes a taped performance on WQXR in New York City.
Third prize and $2,000 went to Yoshihiko Nakano, a 21-year-old violist from Wilmette, Illinois. Nakano is a student at Northwestern University and studies with Roland Vamos. He also was awarded a full scholarship to the Aspen Music Festival and School for summer 2010. …
