Campaigning, meet salesmanship: There's a complex concept to explain.

"You really are just a popcorn box in politics. If you can sell it, it's an issue," said Tom Slade, a former Republican Party of Florida chairman.

That was part of Slade's response when asked about whether Scott Fortune, a lawyer taking on U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown in the Aug. 24 primary, is right to be talking about gerrymandering so much in his campaign.

Not exactly an everyman issue, gerrymandering implies the demographics in Brown's district - not her abilities as a legislator - are what have been keeping her in office. Grasping it requires an understanding of case law and even the demographics of the surrounding districts in GOP control.

In an effort to boil it down, Fortune is unveiling a documentary this week explaining his position against the way the district was drawn.

THE SPIN

Another act caught on film was not an exploration of civics, but it did touch on a topic close to many people's hearts: pizza.

Cameras were flashing for Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink when she was asked to try to spin some dough at Northstar Substation during a gubernatorial campaign stop in Jacksonville last week. She couldn't quite get it right, but was a good sport even after the flipped dough landed partially on her face.

Later, in a talk that focused on a variety of points from education to former Republican Party of Florida Chairman Jim Greer's recent arrest on fraud charges, Sink seemed to resonate well with the crowd of 50 or so at the restaurant.

"She's got it going on. That campaign has the right idea," said Ryan Clarke, external vice president of the Jacksonville Young Democrats.

Clarke was especially pleased with Sink's campaign tactic targeting young professionals.
