Comparing the Self Concepts of the Students in Music High Schools and General High Schools

The purpose of this study is to compare the self concepts of students who have music training and students who don't have music training. Within the scope of this purpose, the self concepts of the students who continue their education in Anatolian Fine Arts High School known shortly as music high schools and the self concepts of the students who continue their education in general high schools were compared. The sample of the study was composed of 100 students some from a general high school selected in Istanbul and some from a music high school. It's been found that the self concept perceptions of the students who continue general schools are higher than the ones who continue music high schools. Also it's been determined that among the students of both high school types, the self concept perceptions of the male students are significantly higher than the female students. The obtained results are discussed within the scope of the general opinion based on the study results showing that the music training creates higher self concept perception.

Self concept which is the most important concept in the Rogers personality theory is the combination of all thoughts, perceptions and values that categorize self. Self includes awareness of what am I and what can I do. This self that is perceived affects both perception of the world and perception of own behaviors for that individual. The person with strong and positive self concept sees the world fairly different than the one with weak self concept. The self concept doesn't need to reflect the reality; an individual can be very successful and prestigious, but can perceive himself/herself completely unsuccessful. Individual evaluates every life experience in connection with the self concept. People want to act in line with their self images. As the degree that the individual have to deny life experiences since they are not in line with the self image of the individual, gets higher, the gap between self and reality becomes wider and anxiety potential becomes higher. In contrast with this, the self concept, thought, life and behaviors of an individual who adapts well are consistent; self is not concrete, it is flexible and it can change by accepting new life experiences and ideas. The other self in Roger's theory is ideal self. We all have thoughts about what kind of a person we want to be. As the real self is closer to ideal self, the individual is that much real and happy. The large difference between ideal and real selves creates an unsatisfied individual (Atkinson et al. 1995: 544).
According to Roger, self is the organized form of the perceptions of the individual about himself/herself. Self concept is not in a form that controls the behaviors of the individual. It doesn't regulate the behaviors ,just symbolizes the current conscious perceptions of the individual. Actually, self concept is the right or wrong hypothesis of the individual about himself/herself (Yanbasti, 1990: 255).
One of the most important factors that affect personality and behaviors is the design of self. Self is the dynamic pattern of the individual's characteristics, skills, other judgments, thoughts about his/her goals and ideals (Baymur 1990: 267). The studies conducted show that the design of self affects the success in school as much as intelligence. In the people who are not successful in the level of their skills, it's been seen that most of the time a negative design of self which doesn't include the belief that the individual can be successful is developed. There is a close relationship between self, personality attributes and learning. In this respect it's important to give weight to the development of healthy and positive self in children at the young ages. And for this reason, it's very important to meet the needs of children, such as being loved, being protected, being successful in suitable tasks, in appropriate levels beginning from the first years of their lives (Baymur 1990: 270). …
