Bring Back RTE Chief, Says Kaiser

BILLIONAIRE Dermot Desmond's lawyers yesterday demanded that RTE boss Cathal Goan return from business overseas to answer questions on the redevelopment of the broadcaster's headquarters.
Lawyers for Mr Desmond, whose Ailesbury Road home backs onto the RTE site, told a planning inquiry it was 'extraordinary' and 'unacceptable' that Mr Goan had left the country after making his opening remarks the previous day about the proposed [euro]350million, ten-year redevelopment.
Mr Desmond - nicknamed The Kaiser and whose fortune is an estimated [euro]1.2billion - has joined forces with the German ambassador Busso von Alvensleben in objecting to the project, which was granted permission last July by Dublin City Council and is expected to provide 650 jobs at the peak of construction. An Bord Pleanala is now ruling on the project.
Last month, the ambassador complained to the council about the noise from the Fair City set, which adjoins his official residence at Danesfield on Seaview Terrace, Dublin 4. But yesterday RTE's lawyer, Jim Brogan told planning inspector Mary Kennedy that Mr Goan was unavailable to answer questions from objectors, including Mr Desmond. …
