THE girlfriend of a fallen Royal Marine has won her battle against his family for a share of his [pounds sterling]300,000 estate.
Rachel Douglas was initially awarded just [pounds sterling]10,000 from the [pounds sterling]300,000 estate of her boyfriend of six years, Sergeant Jacky Manuel, after he was blown up by a suicide bomber in Afghanistan in 2008.
The 36-year-old wanted [pounds sterling]60,000 but the serviceman's brother, Trevor, who was the executor of the will, said Sgt Manuel, 38, had told him weeks before he died that she should receive [pounds sterling]10,000. But at Sunderland County Court last week, Recorder Timothy Kerr disagreed with the family's claim that she was just a casual girlfriend of the serviceman. Ms Douglas proved she had lived with him as his partner in Ouston, County Durham, for more than two years before his death, which entitled her to more of a claim.
