Spirit, Opportunity, and Innovation: Science Education for a Smarter Planet


As we begin the 2011-2012 year, we find ourselves immersed in a dynamic professional conversation about the need for significant improvements in science education. The time has never been more critical for engaging you--our members--along with the entire science education community in a dialogue about how best to promote excellence and innovation in science teaching. The following questions are an important part of this dialogue:

* How can we reach all of our students with the spirit and passion for learning science? How do we ensure that our students have an opportunity to learn to their full potential?

* What are the best teaching practices, and how do we model them?

* How do we locate or create resources to support best practices of science and science teaching?

* How can we engage and actively involve all science education stakeholders (i.e., communities, families, educators, businesses, and others) to make outstanding science teaching happen...that is, science education for a smarter planet?

* What role(s) will the Framework for K--12 Science Education and the Next Generation Science Standards play in science teaching and learning?

These kinds of questions are focal points in many of the articles and features in our journals. As we pursue answers to these questions, I encourage you to review and investigate the ideas in these articles. The authors have included practical and research-based strategies to address the critical issues we face as science teachers.
