Master the Art of Clear Communication

LAST week I conducted a communication workshop for the Hospice and Palliative Care Association, whose mission statement is "quality of life, dignity in death and support in bereavement".
Difficult to get creative with that as a theme, so I thought long and hard about quality and the first brand that came to mind was Quality Street.
Quality communication needs to be built on the cornerstones of accuracy, brevity and clarity. For any organisation to be proud of its communication and to ensure that it is consistent not confusing, employees and spokespeople need to be trained in messaging. I therefore designed the day around managing messaging in work space (internally), public space (business writing, public speaking and traditional media management) and cyberspace.
The group was split into teams and given a supply of chocolates. Delegates were each tasked with a speaking or writing assignment, but were allowed to buy and sell these using the team's supply of chocolates. I was very impressed that no one sold out. Teams were given research material (books, magazines and access to the internet) and were allowed to help one another, but when assistance was required from another team, it had to be paid for, in chocolate. …
