Home-Grown Turkeys Are the Tops for Christmas Dinner
NOTHING beats a locally-reared turkey for a Christmas Day treat, according to a top Welsh poultry breeder, writes Meyrick Brown.
Tony Burgess, chairman of the NFU's Poultry Group in Wales said that by supporting British produce, you help the local economy and guarantee a product with a fantastic taste.
"If you so wish, you can also speak to the farmer who reared the turkey that will end up as the centrepiece of your Christmas dinner," said Mr Burgess.
He was speaking to members of the Welsh Turkey Federation (WTF) who held their well-supported annual meeting, ovenready turkey competition and dinner at the Forge Motel, St Clears, West Wales.
Guest speaker was Mr Haverfordwest, vet, Anton Lowe. Roger Minchin, Newton Lodge, Manorbier deputised for the chairman and officers elected for the coming year were: chairman, Martin Davies and vice-chairman, Steve Goulbourne.
Judges Mr and Mrs Lowe awarded the champion bird prize to Steve Goulbourne for his winning under 12lb entry. He also won the 18lb and over class with Peter and Susan Scale claiming the 13lb to 17lb trophy. …
