A LOVE of reading is one of the greatest gifts you can pass on to a child. Whether as a parent or a teacher, anyone who has the chance to encourage a child to get in to books is lucky indeed, but also has a great responsibility.
Not only does reading enrich a child's life through knowledge and experience gained, it is key to a good education.
If youngsters can't read well by seven, research shows they struggle to catch up and will miss out on the education they deserve and need to find a job.
The book that first opened my eyes to the power of the written word and the escape and excitement it offers, was The Silver Sword, a Second World War adventure by Ian Serraillier. Encouraged by teachers and parents, I devoured the classics.
