The Framework for 21st Century Learning (Partnership for 21st Century Skills 2011) delineates the academic, cognitive, technological, and personal skills, proficiencies, and knowledge that students need to live and work in the digital age.

Most middle school science teachers are already making significant contributions to this national effort by using inquiry-based instruction that routinely incorporates reasoning, problem-solving, information-processing, and communication skills into classroom activities. Instructional approaches in the National Science Education Standards (NRC 1996) and A Framework for K-12 Science Education (NRC 2012) advocate for frequent use of group investigations and projects that foster teamwork and collaboration: workforce skills sought by employers now and in the future.

A Framework for K-12 Science Education also recommends moving away from the recall of facts and rote repetition of procedures to the integration of disciplinary core content, science and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts; the integration of these three dimensions will develop many of the higher-level cognitive skills favored in Framework for 21st Century Learning, such as applying knowledge to new situations, formulating evidence-based explanations, solving problems creatively, constructing and evaluating scientific claims and arguments, and critically evaluating information from numerous sources--digital and otherwise. …
