'Strong Performer' in Environmental Management
THE Philippines has been categorized as a global "strong performer" after gaining a higher mark in environmental governance, based on the 2012 Environmental Performance Index (EPI). It has been ranked 42nd among 132 countries under the "strong performer" category, jumping eight places from its 50th rank in 2010.
The Philippines retained its ranking of eighth in the Asia-Pacific region. It gained perfect scores in the indicators for outdoor air pollution, change in forest cover, and growing stocks in forests. The top five countries are Switzerland, Latvia, Norway, Luxembourg, and Costa Rica.
Concrete programs on environmental protection and management concerning the community helped the Philippines achieved its marked improvement in the ranking. Its strong environmental performance is supported by government programs, in partnership with the private sector, to strengthen the conservation, protection, and utilization of natural resources. Among these are the National Greening Program (NGP), log ban and anti-illegal logging campaign, Adopt-An-Estero/River Program, anti-smoke belching, and geo-hazard assessment and mapping. …
