In Memoriam: Derrick Marquis Smith
On Dec. 7, 2012, the American Correctional Association team lost a beloved friend and colleague, Derrick Marquis Smith. Smith was ACA's facility/finance staff assistant and worked at ACA for more than six years.
Smith was born on Jan. 11, 1979, in Washington, D.C. At the age of seven, Smith began singing in the youth gospel choirs at Mentrotone Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. He was baptized at the age of 16, and continued singing and studying music. He became an accomplished pianist, using his gift to serve his church and other churches in the area.
Smith attended Spingarn High School and the University of the District of Columbia. He continued to pursue his passion of music, became a gifted songwriter, and founded the East Coast-based music label Mellowmusic. He quickly amassed a large following of fans attracted to his brilliant musicianship, stellar falsetto vocals and charismatic performance style. …
