AU Counters Pro-Voucher Propaganda during 'School Choice Week'
When school voucher advocates announced that Jan. 27-Feb. 2 would be "National School Choice Week," Americans United knew just what to do: counter outrageous voucher claims with the facts.
Americans United created a special section for its website, au.org, titled--School Choice Week': A Dose Of Facts Debunks Voucher Propaganda." The section contained links to several articles that challenged the claims of voucher advocates.
For example, voucher boosters often assert that students who receive vouchers excel academically in private schools. In fact, no objective study has shown this to be the case. Several studies show that voucher students perform the same academically as their peers in public schools. AU's site contained links to these studies.
In addition, voucher supporters often insist that the American people favor giving tax aid to private schools. In fact, polls show the opposite. And, as AU pointed out on the site, voters in 24 state referenda have overwhelmingly rejected proposals intended to divert public dollars to private schools.
The site also included a social media component with a special 'Mtter hashtag, #voucherfail. Throughout the week, AU tweeted information about vouchers to its followers on Twitter and created amusing memes that supporters could share on Face-book and other sites.
National School Choice Week was sponsored by the Heritage Foundation, the National Catholic Educational Association, the American Legislative Exchange Council, Betsy DeVos' Alliance for School Choice and their allies. …
