MANILA, Philippines - A slew of acting awards, steady flow of commercial endorsements, and a horde of ladies screaming "Yammy!" every time they see him - these prove the formidable stature that Coco Martin has earned in showbiz.
Yet in spite of the fame, fortune, and fulfillment of his passions, the actor's humility shines through. In an interview on "The Buzz," Sunday, Coco related how his neighborhood provides him with a sense of normalcy. The Kapamilya talent had a new house built in Novaliches, where he was raised.
"Sabi nga nila eh, bakit do'n? Eh kasi inaano nila na malayo, ma-trapik- medyo maraming tao. Dun ako nasanay eh. Ito 'yung mga taong alam kong nagmamahal sa'kin... ito 'yung mga taong poprotekta sa'kin," he said.
In fact, Coco would still walk around the neighborhood and hang out at a nearby store the way he did before showbiz beckoned.
If there are people asking for photos with him, they are probably visitors, he added.
"Pero 'yung mga taga-sa'min, ang tawag pa nga rin sa'kin [ay] Deng-Deng. Kasi 'yun ang palayaw ko do'n. 'Pag dumadaan ako dun, 'yung mga tricycle, ni hindi nga ako hinihintuan eh- Normal [lang]," said he with a laugh. …
