SPONSORED BY: WINNER: TYNE & WEAR FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICE Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service (TWFRS) has driven a number of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) related engagement activities in order to promote equality and to ensure its services are meeting their needs.

Research has shown that the LGBT community can be vulnerable and more at risk of fire or incidents.

They can be excluded from services and also be victims of hate crime. An LGBT network provides information and support for all employees on LGBT issues, including a confidential discussion forum. It engages with members of the LGBT community at events like Pride and International Day Against Homophobia.

This has resulted in an increase in the number of referrals for Home Safety Checks.

It has also been working with Stonewall.
