MANUEL PELLEGRINI arrives at Manchester City this week with a burning desire to prove he is a winner.

The Intertoto Cup is the only trophy that the 59-year-old Chilean has lifted since he came to Europe nine years ago to embark on a journey that has brought him to the Etihad via Villarreal, Real Madrid and Malaga.

But Pellegrini will not feel crushed by the burden of expectation that has been placed on him by City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak. Khaldoon outlined his belief that Pellegrini will inherit a squad capable of challenging for every single trophy next season during a broadcast on the club's website on Friday.

But Pellegrini said "My career has been all about sporting challenges. I am leaving Malaga for a very important project and I will stay true to the values I have built up over many years. I have always tried to get my teams to play with a certain style.

"But this time I know that the style I employ also comes with a need to deliver titles.

"Once you sign for a club like City or Bayern or Chelsea or Real Madrid or Barcelona, it is clear that you have to fight for and win championships.

"At some clubs I have not had the special conditions you need to win trophies, but we have still achieved things that we should be proud of.

"Finishing as runners-up in La Liga with Villarreal was not easy, and neither was taking that team to the semi-finals of the Champions League. …
