SC Orders MWSS, Maynilad, Manila Water, to Answer Petition vs Water Hike
Manila, Philippines --- The Supreme Court (SC) ordered yesterday the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage Authority (MWSS) and two water concessionaires in Metro Manila to answer in 10 days the petition that challenged as unwarranted and exorbitant the rate increases set for implementation this month.
In a petition, the SC was told that the Manila Water Co. and the Maynilad Water Systems, Inc. are set to increase their rates at P5.83 and P8.52 per cubic meter, respectively.
After yesterday's full court session, the SC required the MWSS and the two water firms to answer the petition in a non-extendible period of 10 days.
The SC is expected to tackle the plea for a temporary restraining order (TRO) after the filing of the comment.
The petitioners in the case are the Water for All Refund Movement (WARM), Water Watch Coalition, Inc., and Alyansa ng Mamamayang Naghihirap, Inc. (Almana).
The petitioners said the MWSS, Maynilad, and Manila Water pursued their plan to increase water rates despite opposition from the consumers and stakeholders. …
