A Good Data Source for Statistics on Health Care


"What are you going to do?"

This is a question we hear human resource and other business professionals asking each other with regard to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), also known as the "health care reform law" or sometimes "Obamacare."

With the major provisions set to take effect Jan. 1, 2014, many charged with responsibility for choosing health care options for their fellow employees are still feeling their way through the complex requirements of this legislation. While it is unclear how PPACA may ultimately change Americans' health care options, it may be helpful for those with responsibility for choosing health care alternatives for their organization to look at the current state of insurance offerings for employees.

As an employers' association with over 1,000 members in diverse industries, the Management Association is a good source of data for the business community on a host of employee-specific issues. We provide statistics on wages, salaries and benefits through a variety of surveys we conduct throughout the year. The 2013/2014 Chicagoland Policies & Benefits Survey is one compilation, with over 200 organizations responding to about 400 questions on all areas of health and welfare benefits, working conditions, paid time off and more.

Overall, 98.6 percent of employers offer employee-only health coverage of some kind.

A slightly lower percentage offer employee plus spouse, at 89.08.

Employee and dependent coverage currently stands at 89.28 percent; this may increase over the next few years as under PPACA, in order for an employer with 50 or more full-time employee equivalents (FTEs) to avoid penalties, it must offer dependents coverage under its plan. It is important to note, however, that spouses are not considered dependents under PPACA (so spousal coverage is not required).

Far and away, the most popular coverage option for employers to offer is a PPO, with 91 percent providing this choice. …
