Editorial: The 109th Anniversary Celebration of the Bureau of Internal Revenue
The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) is celebrating its 109th Anniversary on August 1, 2013. The BIR's role is vital in enabling accurate and efficient collection and processing of tax revenues.
The BIR, under the Department of Finance, implements several programs to improve its performance and reach its collection target. Two priority projects are: to identify and prosecute violators of the National Internal Revenue Code, and to strengthen BIR's administrative sanctions such as suspending business operations and temporary closure of non-compliant taxpayers. Its other programs are Tax Compliance Verification Drive, which issues reminders letter to all business establishments during tax mapping operations; BIR Citizen's Charter, implemented on eight identified registration-related frontline services, in compliance with Anti-Red Tape Act of 2007; Quality Management System (QMS) for business registration process; and BIR Personnel Integrity Program, which conducts administrative investigations.
The agency was lauded for surpassing its target for the month of April this year, collecting P148.99 billion in tax revenues, 4.43 percent higher than its P142.66-billion target. The month of April is traditionally the yearly deadline for filing the income tax returns. …
