CORRUPT Peruvian police colluding with drug lords are suspected of being behind the women's doomed [euro]1.7m smuggling bid.
The MoS has discovered that police have failed to contact either the travel agent used to book the women's hotels in Peru, or one of the hotels named in one of their police statements, to find out who paid for their stay.
A senior airport transport authority official said: 'These women were caught by another authority at the airport - not the police. So when the police came they had no other option but to arrest them. The investigation could have gone further if the police had started to dig.' Corruption is a major problem in Peru. From January to June this year, 3,118 policemen have been sanctioned for negligence and corruption.
The Nuevo Mundo Viajes travel agency's Lima office confirmed that Melissa Reid and Michaella McCollum Connolly's hotel rooms were booked through them but refused to say who paid. An employee confirmed that the police had not called. …
