Introduction

Women are the important asset in the working environment. The women who involve in the working environment are increasing since 1970's. It was supported by the involvement of women in certain sectors, for example, manufacturing, food and beverage, garment and textile, retailing and so on. The involvement of women in working environment is increasing.

After involving in the manufacturing industry, the women move one step ahead in the service sector and many sectors and the number is increasing. The number of women worker is increasing three times from 1967 with 266900 persons to 855000 persons (Ismail & Aminah, 1999, p. 17).

The increment of women in working environment is still restricted with culture value, normal and patriarchy in the social and environment. The gender function plays a role in delivering the responsibility to the women in managing household and work which treated as household additional income. Therefore, women do not get fair support equal with the men, especially from the aspect of salary which women are paid lower than men.

The same situation in women participation in employees' union and employee' union committees structure. Women position in employees' union as the member and to do carry out the function which less influence in the committee. The Table shows the representation of women and men in Administration MTUC (2000).

The women position in administration committees in employees' union is very low in comparing with the men. Women are given less power in decision making and employees' union governance aspect.

The Research Problem

The women involvement in the labor market is increasing. The women are exposed to many challenges, for example, retrenchment, gender discrimination, sexual harassment and so on. The welfare of women is overlook. The employees' union is a mechanism which fights for the right of employee as the member for the management. The function for the employees' union is to make discussion with the administration and employer with the term and condition of the working environment.

The research investigates the employees' union as the medium for the women worker to voice out the problem to the management and solves the problem. This aligns the objectives to create a comfortable and harmony working environment between the employer and employee.

The Research Question

The research question is how the women involvement in the management of employees' union in the private sector? This question relates with the women involvement as the member and union leader.

The other research question is what makes women participate the employees' union in the private sector? This question relates the factors which are the supporter for the women to be the leader to involve in the employees' union administration.

The last question for the research is what is the women contribution in the employees' union? Through this study, it found out the solutions for the above questions.

The Research Objectives

The research objectives are:

1. To study the women involvement in the Sabah Banking Employees Union (SBEU).

2. To study the factors influence the women involvement in the Sabah Bank Employees Union (SBEU).

3. To identify the contribution of women in the Sabah Banking Employees' Union (SBEU).

Significance of the Study

This research promotes the equal opportunity of women and men in the working environment. The women leadership is encouraged in every employees union in International Labor Organization. The equal opportunity and authority between women and men will increase the democracy and fairness among the women and men.

Through this study, it is hope that it shed a light on the women worker of the important of the employee's union.

The Operational Definition

In this study, leadership is the administration of employees' union which includes the whole committees, which are executive committees, committees between relationship and annual meeting committees. …
