Student Explores Psychological Factors of Weight Loss


WEIGHT loss isn't just a physical journey; it's a psychological one as well.

University of Southern Queensland doctoral student Rosalyn Taylor is studying the psychological factors involved in weight loss and just how much impact depression, stress and anxiety can have on weight loss success.

"The thought is that the more of a negative mental state you're in, the less chance you have of succeeding, but just how much can your mental well-being impact your weight loss?," Ms Taylor said.

"Finding this out can help give us an insight into the psychology of losing weight and also help weight loss program coordinators realise how external factors can contribute to the success of their participants.

"To do this, we're searching for a variety of volunteers who are commencing a range of different weight loss programs.

"We want them to record their results, whether they're starting a new diet, joining a gym or participating in a rigorous weight loss program over a few weeks."

Ms Taylor said all participants had to do was complete three short online surveys at the beginning and end of the program, as well as a follow up one a month later. …
