First for Pharma: First for Pharmaceutical Industry Leadership


WITH its membership reecting a "who's who" of the North East's pharmaceutical and support industries, Newcastle University's pharma community, First for Pharma, is a growing hub of sector excellence.

Since 2010, First for Pharma has been both a virtual and real meeting place for everyone in the region's pharma and related industries. It is a place to share information and relay news; it acts as a sector directory, posts vacancies and oers and exchanges strategic and informed opinions.

"As well as promoting what companies in the region have to oer to the world, First for Pharma gives member companies a reason to get together and get to know each other - key to developing relationships that are the basis for eective collaboration," said Roland Jurke, CEO at Nimasol.

FIRST FOR PHARMA WEBSITE www.rstforpharma.co.uk is this community's virtual meeting place. 'e site provides invaluable visibility for the regional pharma cluster, reecting the sector's specialisms within the more general process industry cluster. Despite its local focus, the website enjoys international reach, vital for attracting those all-important investors, wherever they're located.

Its success in representing the activities of the pharmaceutical cluster in the North East in a partisan manner has meant that the site attracts many visitors, and encourages membership.

Ian Mains, commercial director, Cogent Group, said: "'e Cogent Group has supported First for Pharma from its inception and greatly values the benets of membership. 'ese include eective communication through the First for Pharma website and newsletter, which have enabled us to advise pharma organisations across the region on the skills agenda that the Cogent Group manages on behalf of the sector."

LEADERSHIP DINNERS From the website was born the thought-provoking Leadership dinners. 'ese quarterly gatherings encourage collaboration and stimulate discussion among our members from the region's leading pharma organisations, ranging from global companies to local start-ups. Members share their passion and knowledge of the pharma industry with their peers, developing opinions and understanding of the current and future pharma environment.

DINNERS are convened by Michael Whitaker, associate dean of innovation in the Faculty of Medical Sciences at Newcastle University. However, diversity and specialism are always on the menu via presentations by two dierent prominent industry gures each time. 'ese topics launch active discussions as they address issues particular to pharmaceutical manufacturing, and are made richer by the exchange of members' experiences. …
